What is cardiovascular diseaseCardiovascular disease (CVD) involves the heart or blood vessels (arteries and veins). It can appear as a range of symptoms related to atherosclerosis (arterial disease) which usually involves the heart. These include a heart attack, a stroke which may paralyse part of your body, and aid the development of diabetes. CVD is serious and is treated by doctors, cardiologists, thoracic surgeons, vascular surgeons, neurologists, interventional radiologists, and dieticians. New Zealand has a high and increasing rate of CVD, being the number one cause of death and disability. This is especially true within the Maori and Pacific Island communities.
It starts from adolescenceResearch has shown that vascular injury accumulates from adolescence, making prevention efforts necessary from childhood onwards. Later in life, by the time heart problems are detected, the underlying cause (atherosclerosis) is usually quite advanced, having progressed for decades.
Preventing CVDThe risk factors for CVD are unhealthy eating, lack of exercise and smoking. If you are at risk, you should modify your life by:
- Lowering your LDL cholesterol by reducing your saturated fat intake. These are high in chocolate, diary cream, butter, meat, oils.
- Lowering your Triglyceride levels by reducing consumption of sugary and processed foods.
- Reducing Homocysteine levels by supplementing your diet with extra Vitamins B6 and B12, and folic acid.
- Increasing your antioxidant activity with a higher consumption of fruits and vegetables.
- Lowering fibrinogen and growth factors by cutting back on foods such as red meat, dairy products, poultry and eggs.
How do I know if I am at risk?Your risk is measured by taking your blood pressure and cholesterol level ratio (Total/HDL). Other factors such as sex, age, diabetes, family history, previous CVD events, also play a part. Talk to your doctor if you are concerned.
