Zinc and cholesterol testing in-store |
|
 |
Testing in-storeYes we can test you for zinc and total cholesterol in-store. It takes about 10 mins and a small charge applies.
ZincThe test. A few drops of a special biological zinc solution is placed in the mouth. If you can taste it then you are zinc deficient. What is measured is a general zinc deficiency. The result may cause you to take a zinc supplement or investigate further.
The importance of zinc Zinc is an important element for healthy skin, eyes and circulation. For example, findings from a
nationwide clinical trial, reported in the October 2001 issue of Archives of Ophthalmology*, are that high levels of antioxidants and zinc significantly reduce the risk of
advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and its associated
vision loss. However, they had no significant effect on the
development or progression of cataracts. More here. And News Release here. * Antioxidants, Zinc, and Age-Related Macular Degeneration: Results and Recommendations. Jampol. Arch Ophthalmol. 2001; 119: 1533-1534.
Cholesterol The test. A small prick on your finger and a blood drop is analysed in a special device shown here. It measures TOTAL CHOLESTEROL ONLY.
The importance of cholesterol. High blood cholesterol levels are a significant risk factor for heart
attacks and strokes. Ideally your diet and lifestyle should encourage high “good” cholesterol (HDL) levels, and reduce “bad” cholesterol (LDL) levels. Total cholesterol is HDL + LDL cholesterol. Often it is expressed as a ratio HDL level/Total cholesterol.
According to the National Heart Foundation of New Zealand, Total
Cholesterol should be below 4.0 mmol/L. However many factors play a
part. You are especially at risk if you are diabetic, smoke, eat fatty foods to excess, and are in the older age group. According to the results of this test, our pharmacist will advise you what steps, if any, you should take next. This may include seeing your doctor.
