Traveller's diarrhea: known as 'Delhi Belly'
If you are away in an exotic place and suddenly feel your insides churning and a VERY URGENT desire to locate a toilet, then you probably have Traveller’s Diarrhoea. Colloquially called names such as 'Deli Belly' or 'Montezuma's Revenge', it is a truly debilitating condition that can wreck a holiday. Because of this is useful to know about diarrhoea, how to prevent it, and how to treat it if it occurs.
Traveller’s Diarrhoea is the general name given to infections of the stomach and bowel got from contaminated food or water. The cause can be bacteria, a virus, a parasite or a toxin related to these. Although it can be acquired in any country, it is notorious in Latin America, India, SE Asia, and anywhere where there is poor sanitation and hygiene.
Symptoms can vary, but usually include churning abdominal cramps, fever, excess gas, bloating, nausea, and vomiting leading to severe explosive diarrhea. Often this can start so quickly that embarrassing accidents can occur.
Normally symptoms persist for a few days, but occasionally can persist for weeks. If it is mild it is possible to continue your holiday, but when severe it is impossible to leave the toilet area for any length of time. Because it leads to significant fluid loss and severe dehydration it can be life threatening. Fortunately in most cases the symptoms are mild and short-lasting, and do not require treatment. Generally the symptoms clear up on their own, often within a week or so, without long-term consequences.
WARNING: If symptoms persist, especially dehydration, high fevers, abdominal pain, blood when going to the bathroom, then seek medical attention.
Prevention using Dukoral
To prevent the worst effects of Travellers' Diarrhea, before you leave we can supply the oral vaccine Dukoral®. It specifically protects against cholera (caused by bacteria Vibrio cholerae) and Travellers' Diarrhea caused by E. Coli bacteria that live in the small intestine. These are the cause of 25-50% of cases of Travellers' Diarrhea, and can contaminate food and water as a result of bad hygiene.
Dukoral is taken as 2 doses, 1 week apart, on an empty stomach. The doses should be stored in the fridge until used.
After completing the course, the protection will last 3 months, and as long as it has been less than 5 years from the last dose, a booster dose only is required to regain protection for another 3
months.
More on Dukoral here.
NOTE: Dukoral must be ordered 3 business days beforehand. It is NOT kept on the premises due to its short lifetime. It is unfunded so a charge applies.
Allow say 7-10 days before travelling.
